NAME DROPPING

Before I could wheeze out a response, Virto clamped a frying pan sized hand over my mouth, effectively cutting off both my words and airway.

So much for guilds being safe spaces.

Then, as I was frantically debating what to do about this unexpected threat to my life, my HUD flashed.

Virto has invited you to a private cortexing channel. Accept Y/N.

I met his gaze only to find his expression brooked no argument. The meaning was clear. If I wanted my breathing privileges reinstated, I had better accept his request. Needless to say, I didn’t spend a lot of time thinking it over.

Virto: So here’s what’s gonna happen, TJFT. I’m going to let go of you and we’re going to act like you just mouthed off. Nothing more. Am I clear?

Tim, JUST FUCKING TIM: What the fuck, dude? I have no idea what the hell is going on. Why did you attack me?

Virto: Okay, let me try to make this extra simple. Either do as I say or I keep holding you like this until you either stop flopping around or learn to breathe out of your own asshole. And before you ask, yes, killing you is technically against the rules but the penalty for me is a slap on the wrist. Trust me when I say, I can deal with it.

I was already starting to get a bit woozy, so there really wasn’t any choice in the matter.

Tim, JUST FUCKING TIM: Okay! I get it! I’ll do whatever you want.

Virto: Good. Now follow my lead and pray to whatever gods you believe in that nobody important has been eyeballing your feed this past hour.

Virto finally released me and I slumped to one knee, trying to suck in breath after breath. Gotta say, I never realized how sweet air could be.

“Say that again, meat. I dare you,” Virto growled.

My first instinct was to ask what the fuck he was talking about, but then I remembered his instructions and what the alternative involved. “Learn to take some criticism, you ... Mortal Kombat boss wannabe! All I said was your classroom technique could use some work.”

Virto: Damn. Words hurt, TJFT.

“Flap your face worms at me again, meat,” he said aloud, “and you’ll find out my fist technique more than makes up for it. Am I clear?”

“Crystal,” I snapped, holding his gaze while hoping I wasn’t laying it on too thick.

Tim, JUST FUCKING TIM: Are we good here? Can you finally tell me what’s going on?

Virto: Yeah. Just be thankful I stopped you before you said anything else. Trust me when I say Nadok is not a name you want to be throwing around with reckless abandon.

Needless to say, I was now intrigued in addition to being pants-shittingly terrified, especially since I’d already mentioned all this to Pixel. What the hell had I accidentally stumbled into here?

Tim, JUST FUCKING TIM: Why?

Virto wasn’t quite ready to answer that yet, though.

Virto: Gods be damned, kid, you almost made me piss myself. Thank goodness we were just shooting the shit.
